Forks Over Knives Screening at Whole Foods on Wed. Oct. 19th

Our local, Pearl Street Whole Foods has also joined Food Day with a film screening plus appetizers and snacks. Here’s the word: “Bundle up for a movie night on our patio as we host a showing of “Forks Over Knives.” This movie examines the profound claim that most, if not all, of the degenerative diseases that afflict us can be controlled, or even reversed by rejecting animal-based and processed foods. Appetizers and snacks start at 6:30pm. Showing 7-8:30pm. FREE.

Hazon Launches Major Food Initiatives in Conjunction with Food Day

Hazon is a movement initiated by leaders in the Jewish faith that is committed to creating healthy and sustainable communities in the Jewish world and beyond. The Hazon Food Conference brings together foodies, educators, rabbis, farmers, nutritionists, chefs, food writers and families around the country who share a passion for learning about and celebrating food. In conjunction with Food Day, that group is launching its Food Guide & Food Audit pilot with a conference call bringing together a dozen or so Jewish institutions around the country.

At the local level, the steering committee for the Denver/Boulder Local Hazon will be supplementing its regular meeting on October 24th with a teaching around Food Day.

Whole Foods is Throwing a Party

Whole Foods has joined Food Day on the national level. As announced in its Oct. 7 blog post, the most important ingredient in Food Day is people, and Whole Foods invites all of us to organize an event and help make Food Day a success. The Whole Food’s post has a lot of ideas and resources, including region-specific menus and a food bank locator (to donate food for Food Day.) The grocer has also partnered with Epicurious to provide a free, downloadable Food Day Dinner Party Kit, which contains great ideas for planning any party big or small, plus conversation starters, recipes and even pumpkin-carving stencils. Boulder Family Farms Introduces Local Foods Baskets for Food Day

For Food Day, Boulder Family Farms is offering bountiful baskets of local produce. The visual appeal of these artfully arranged baskets makes them hard to resist, which is the point. You’ll love making meals with them–or share one with a friend who is unfamiliar with the incredible taste of local, fresh vegetables. It’s easy to spread the word about local, safe and healthful foods with baskets reasonably priced at $20 for a gorgeous cornucopia of the local harvest. The Mayor’s Last Dinner Will Be a Local One

Mayor Susan Osborne will be leaving the Boulder City Council in November. Departing council members have always gotten to choose the meal that precedes their last council meeting, and as a final gesture of support to the local foods community, Mayor Osborne decided to have a local foods meal. Here’s what Boulder County growers and producers are serving up, through the culinary wizardry of local foods chefs Chelsea Jowell and Susanna Minichiello with Back to Basics: (Best of all, you can have this same dinner to celebrate Food Day and support local growers as one of the Food Day events!)

Boulder’s Mayor Has Signed On!

On Friday, I picked up the Mayor’s Proclamation, declaring that October 24 as National Food Day, and urging all citizens to participate in the activities planned. Mayor Susan Osborne was enthusiastic when I told her about Food Day, as Boulder’s Council has long been a strong supporter of local foods. In fact, Mayor Osborne is further showing her support by selecting a local foods dinner for her last council meeting before her term ends in November. Thanks Mayor Osborne and Boulder City Council!

And do be sure to attend the Boulder City Council meeting on Tuesday, October 18 at 5:00 when Mayor Osborne will officially sign the Proclamation and hand the official copy to Food Day supporters. Please join us at this meeting in a good show of support for Local Foods: Council Chambers, second floor, Municipal Building, 1777 Broadway, at the southwest corner of Broadway and Canyon.

Slow Food Boulder County Joins Food Day

At its Board meeting on October 6, Slow Food Boulder County enthusiastically voted to support Food Day 2011 in two big ways: Slow food volunteers will team with our supporters at the Boulder and Longmont Farmers Markets to man information and education tables at both Markets on October 15 and 22. Slow Food is dedicated to goals very similar to the 6 Food Day Goals, so members will be a great source of information for Boulder County folks wishing to learn how they can join the Food Day movement.

Slow Food will also be hosting a Local Foods potluck at Back to Basics Kitchen in Lafayette, spreading the activities to east county. On Sunday, Oct. 23rd, at 5:00pm, Bring your favorite homemade dish to share featuring at least one local and/or organic ingredient to celebrate Food Day. If this is just not going to happen, don’t worry! Come anyway. Slow down, enjoy delicious food and socialize over some real food. BYOB. Back to Basics is a unique local foods business, providing “Farm to Fridge Weekly Meals” made with local and organic ingredients. Order on Sunday from a weekly menu; pick up on Wednesday for dinner. Back to Basics also offers local foods catering and classes.

Slow Food Boulder County seeks to celebrate, educate, and strengthen awareness of food: from the farm, to the market, to the kitchen and to the table. The organization promotes stewardship of our land; sound food production policies, and local, seasonal and organic foods, along with good, clean and fair food for all.

Boulder County Public Health Hosts Food Day Potluck

Boulder County Public Health employees will show their support for local, safe and healthy foods by joining together for a local foods potluck lunch on Oct.24th. Local beef burgers as well as veggie burgers will be coming off the grill. Employees will be bringing side dishes featuring local ingredients, along with the recipe to share with colleagues. In addition to great food, the potluck area will include Food Day information and conversation cards to spark discussions about the importance of a safe, healthy and local food supply and how that relates to the healthy eating and active living segments of the recently developed Public Health Improvement Plan. Those objectives are critical components of one of Public Health’s top three goals of Reducing Obesity.

Employees will also be encouraged to host their own local foods events in their homes, neighborhoods and schools.
